German Utility Tries to Break Russian Gas Stranglehold

German utility RWE AG is seeking access to natural gas reserves in Turkmenistan in order to reduce its reliance on Russian supplies, according to a news account. A planned pipeline that would ship gas from Turkmenistan to Austria is intended to cut Europe's dependence on Russian fuel. Russia has cut off gas to the region twice in the last three years.
