Natural gas leaks are a substantial source of methane emissions, which aggravate climate change, according to an article in the New York Times. Acting quickly to stanch the loss of methane, which comprises 95% of natural gas, could substantially cut global warming in the short run, according to studies by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Methane is a valuable target because, ton for ton, it traps 25 times as much heat as carbon dioxide, researchers say.
